Understanding Toyota VINs
Toyota VINs follow the standard 17-character format established by NHTSA in 1981. The first character indicates the country of manufacture — most Toyotas made in Japan start with 'J', while those assembled in the US start with '1' or '4'.
Characters 4 through 8 encode the model, body style, engine type, and safety systems. Character 9 is a check digit used to verify the VIN's validity.
Toyota VIN Structure
| Position | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Country of manufacture (J = Japan, 1/4 = USA) |
| 2–3 | 2 | Manufacturer identifier (T = Toyota Motor) |
| 4–8 | 5 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body, engine, restraints |
| 9 | 1 | Check digit — validates VIN authenticity |
| 10–17 | 8 | Vehicle identifier: year, plant, serial number |

Finding Your Toyota VIN
On most Toyota models, the VIN is stamped on a metal plate visible through the lower-left corner of the windshield on the driver's side. You'll also find it on the door jamb sticker and in your vehicle's title and registration documents.
